Understand how health care works in Canada

Canada is currently among the top-ranked countries in the world when it comes to average life expectancy. In Canada, the average life expectancy is 82 years old, which is a very good result in comparison with other developed countries.

Sooner or later, all people will need to seek medical help. What is the health care system like in Canada? Let’s find out!

Canadian healthcare is free at some point, it is paid through taxes. Health care is funded and administered primarily by the country’s 13 provinces and territories. Each has its own insurance plan. Benefits and delivery approaches vary. All citizens and permanent residents, however, do not have to pay for most health-care services.

Government health insurance plans give you access to basic medical services. You can also get a private or employer-sponsored health insurance, that you may be offered at work. It may cover excluded services and can include prescription drugs, dental care and so on. It all depend on the type of coverage.

In addition, each province issues its own health card. If you are visiting another Canadian province or territory and need hospital or medical care, you can use your current health card.  If you are moving to another province in Canada permanently, you need to obtain a new card from the province where you will residing.

It is your responsibility to inform your provincial or territorial plan that you are leaving and where you are moving, and to register with the health insurance plan of your new province or territory.
